Project Description

A new state of the art, Al Mafraq Hospital, will be opened in 2013, replacing the existing hospital. The newly built, modern facility will continue to provide the service and personal care, state of the art facilities, while securing the hospital’s position as a leading trauma and surgery hospital. It will also serve as the community hospital for one of the fastest growing areas in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.


The Challenge

iTech was appointed to convert 2D set of IFC drawings into a coordinated set of BIM models. In addition, ITECH is responsible to provide overall Project BIM Management and support our Client’s engineering team in the design, coordination, and documentation of all trades. This was the first BIM delivery for a healthcare project for our Client.

The Solution

iTech was responsible to create BIM models from drawings issued for construction, perform interdisciplinary design coordination, subcontractor management, generate shop drawings and integrate as-built information into the models. Intelligent, highly technical 3D virtual models of the new construction and extensive infrastructure work were used in the field to help visualize and eliminate conflicts among the various trades. The models also were a vital component to streamline quality control, constructability analysis, cost estimating and project scheduling.

The Result

The fully coordinated BIM models of all trades provided visual references which improved awareness and understanding of what was included within each sub-contractors scope of work. The 3D model provided a realistic representation of the project. This helped to manage the client’s expectations and assisted in the decision making process to resolve any design coordination issues. The Client was able to identify all problematic areas before executing the construction work and present a working solution to the Owner.

Overall, the use of the Revit platform helped the project team make informed decisions early in the process and uncover issues that, on a traditional project, might not have surfaced until construction. For our Client, the use of Revit facilitated cost savings by improving its efficiency.
